Office Furniture Leasing - Learn the Pros and Cons

Designing and decorating an office space is often an exciting and complicated but creative task. If your budged won't allow you to purchase, you can lease office furniture for any period of time, varying from a few weeks or months to a certain number of years.
Office furniture leasing may allow you to do more in terms of layout and design and to swap out existing pieces for newer or more efficient ones as the need arises.

Who prefers the leasing option and why?

Start up companies that do not have sufficient cash on hand or that may not yet have a permanent office location should consider leasing office furniture. Leasing will allow the business to save cash and in the event of a change in location, to change furniture as well. It's much easier to avail yourself of the opportunity for the leasing company to retrieve old furniture and deliver new pieces to a different location than to pay more money to the movers. (Leasing has an added advantage of establishing a solid record of payment for a new business that may, at some point, need to create a credit line or take out a loan.)

For established companies, leasing furniture allows for a less expensive upgrade to an office space. Furniture for lease is just as good as or sometimes better than purchased pieces. By leasing, an established firm can keep their office style new and fresh to enhance their professional image and to convey an air of prosperity and stability. Leasing can also serve to expand available money to remodel an office. If it really is time to paint the walls, add a room, or change the office configuration but you don't have the money to do that and get the new furniture the changes would require, look at how much you could save with leasing to make your remodelling budget stretch farther.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of leasing furniture?

Commercial furniture leasing enables businesses to pick from a range of furniture types including lines that might be beyond their purchase ability. By opting to lease office furniture you will get a replacement piece under the terms of the original lease agreement if problems occur rather than facing an expensive company investment for a whole new unit. (Some lease companies offer yearly updates built into their service contracts.)

Some critics of leasing, however, feel that over the life of the lease you wind up paying for the worth of the furniture several times over. This school of thought holds that it is better to own something outright than to pay "rent" for the item. Really it's a matter of personal business style. In some businesses where image counts, leasing makes maintaining a stylish, cutting edge office environment less of a financial burden. For businesses that do not need to project an image and simply need desks and chairs, outright ownership might make more sense.
